The Mini fridge, powered by USB, is a plastic box with a cool circle/ring shaped plate at the bottom, attached to what looks to be a heat sync with a fan. The ONLY thing this fridge will keep cool is a CANNED drink, nothing else. The fridge is designed to take away heat from only the bottom of the can. And even then, the drink does not stay very cool at all.

It's very easy to use. All you do is plug in the USB in any USB drive.

The best thing to do is have a coke or 7up (or whatever) in a regular sized fridge until it's cold. Then you can take it out and keep it cool for maybe an hour in the mini fridge, so you need to drink it pretty fast.

And the blue LED light is not bright at all.

If you're contemplating whether or not to get this product, I would say DO NOT get it. If you're looking for a mini fridge, spend a bit of extra money on something that will actually work.

The mini USB fridge is a neat Idea, it just does not work in practice. You plug into a USB port, it leaches power to run a fan on a heat sink, and does indeed cool the plate in the bottom of the fridge. The way cans are designed though, it doesn't make enough contact to transfer the heat.

It may keep an already cold drink cool, especially if the container is flat bottomed and makes good contact with the cooling plate.

I'll keep mine, might be an interesting hack project for something else, and it looks cool. Read More.

This refrigerator has a design problem with it's thermostat which tends to stick at random causing it to stop operating. Luckily for me, the problem began showing up immediately which put it under the Amazon guarantee. Amazon gave me several options to choose from in order resolve the problem to my satisfaction. However, when I bought this product, I was warned by another buyer via an Amazon referral on this product, of this problem. Unfortunately for him, the problem didn't show up until he had the refrigerator for several months, so the Amazon guarantee had expired. I bought this refrigerator because it seemed to be exactly what I needed at a good price. I thought that other guy's problem with this product was probably just a fluke. I was wrong, it's a mechanical design problem.

It sat several days at the freight office. When I called them and asked why it sat so long, they said they didn't have my phone number. Took a day off of work to receive the reefer, and the freight office sent only one guy instead of two. The two of us wrestled the reefer into the house and I changed the door swing, loaded up the fridge, and turned it on.

FIVE HOURS later and it isn't even cool in the freezer, even though the compressor's humming. I got online and went to Haier's Website. They have a troubleshooting solver online, only this item isn't listed. I called their help number, got hung up on, called back, and got put on hold.

The EdgeStar has much to boast of: it is lightweight, easy to carry and move, roomy, attractive, and versatile as both a refrigerator and (marginally) as a freezer. Setup is simple, and the price is excellent. Strongly tainting this appliance however, is a thermostat dial which is either incompetently designed, incompetently calibrated, or both

Before continuing, let's not fail to note the advertised description for this product: "Just turn the thermostat to select the appropriate temperature for your application!"

Falling with equal snugness on the Things That Make You Go Duh list is the instruction manual telling us that "The knob has markings to indicate the relative temperature settings, but in general, turning the knob counter-clockwise corresponds to colder temperatures."

So if we turn the dial one way, it gets colder. Turn it the other way it gets warmer. We can handle that. The markings on the dial bear witness to and confirm this elegant conception of appliance design:

regrigeration------> MIN......OFF.....MAX

freezing-----------> MIN......||......MAX

Interesting then, that in practice there is *no* temperature change in the freezer when dialed to "MIN", or dialed to "MAX". I measure both at a steady 20 degrees.

With some playing, one discovers that colder temperatures are achieved, erratically, within the petite 1.5 millimeter space between the two vertical lines separating "Min" and "Max".

Moving counter clockwise per instructions along the dial after the arrow marked "Freezer", the temperatures I normally get are, in order:

20 (when dialed to "Min")
15 (when dialed to the left vertical line)
4 or 12 degrees (when between the two vertical lines)
10 (when dialed to the right vertical line)
20 (when dialed to "Max).

Perhaps the advertised 0 degree capability is buried someplace within the 1.5 mm space between the two vertical lines, but after several days of moving the dial minutely to the left or right, I'm unable to find it.

Additionally, after reaching the coldest discernable temperature of 4 degrees once, it took me 2 days to find it again while continuing my hunt for the elusive advertised 0 degrees.

This is especially frustrating since it takes about half a day or more for a temperature change to be reached within the freezer after moving the thermostat dial -- and when you move it, you don't know for certain if you're making it colder or warmer.
Which is to say, this isn't a particular fast appliance: The manual recommends not introducing frozen food to the freezer until it's been turned to the coldest setting (wherever that is) for at least 2 hours after turning it on. That seems wildly optimistic to me. In practice, it takes roughly 5 hours to freeze undersized 1" ice cubes from power-up using the tray bundled with this freezer.

To its credit, the EchoStar is fine as a refrigerator, and fine as a freezer as long as you aren't picky about hitting the the normally recommended 0 degrees for frozen foods.
But sorry, it should not require several days to find the coldest temperature on a device by nudging a dial back and forth within a space of a milimeter. And oddly enough, even without the instruction booklet telling me to do so, I fully expect "Max" to be colder than "Min", and not be actually located at some microscopicly ambiguous point between the two.

This fridge replaced the old one in my apartment because the old one died, and upon it being delivered I was a little worried that it wasn't big enough since it was so much smaller than my old one. My worries were squelched after I started using it, this is a nice space saving refrigerator, perfect for small apartments or bar areas in homes. It has a very deep frost-free freezer with lots of space, one adjustable rack and space in the door as well. The fridge area has two adjustable glass shelves, plenty of space in the door and a nice crisper in the bottom. I love the fact that it has separate temperature controls for the fridge and freezer. This is all I need and more in a great stainless steel look. Definitely worth it if you need a fridge for small spaces or a second smaller one!
